Association of polypharmacy with postural instability and impaired balance in community-dwelling older adults in Turkey

Objective: Polypharmacy, an important geriatric syndrome, has been shown to be independent risk factor for falling. However, the data about effects of polypharmacy on balance is lacking. We aimed evaluate and inappropriate drug use in older adults. Patients Methods: Fifty-one patients using ≥ 5 drugs 50 < were included study. Inappropriate usage was evaluated by Beers criteria. Postural stability falling investigated Biosway Portable Balance System (BPBS). Activities functional status assessed Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) Specific Confidence Scale (ABC). All underwent comprehensive assessment. Results: Age, gender, hand grip strength, SPPB scores similar between control groups (all had p>0.05). ABC score higher group than (p<0.01). Overall, anterior-posterior, medial-lateral index eyes closed firm surface detected BPBS higher, indicating worse (p<0.05). Limit lower (p=0.03).
